Master the Art of the Perfect Custom T-Shirt: A Guide by Timothy Ink

Designing a custom t-shirt for your business, school, or event should be an exciting creative process, not an overwhelming chore. At Timothy Ink, we’ve helped countless groups bring their visions to life, and we’ve distilled that experience into four easy steps to ensure you get exactly what you need.

Follow this guide to create high-quality gear your team will actually want to wear.

Step 1: Maximize Your Budget

A great shirt doesn't have to break the bank. Your total cost is generally influenced by a few key factors:

  • Quantity: Ordering in bulk significantly reduces the cost per shirt.

  • Design Complexity: To keep prices low, aim for a design with 1–3 colors and avoid specialty inks like glitter unless necessary.

  • Print Locations: A single-location print (like just the front) is more cost-effective than printing on the front, back, and sleeves.

  • Shipping: Plan ahead! Standard delivery (usually around two weeks) is often free, whereas rush orders add to your total.

Step 2: Choose the Right Base Shirt

The "blank" you choose dictates how the shirt feels and how long it lasts. We recommend focusing on quality fabric to ensure the shirt becomes a wardrobe staple.

  • 100% Cotton: A classic choice. For a premium, soft feel, look for ringspun or combed ringspun cotton.

  • Performance Polyester: These are lightweight and moisture-wicking, making them the gold standard for sports and activewear.

  • Tri-Blends: These offer a "buttery-soft" feel and great stretch, maintaining their shape even after multiple washes.

  • Weight Matters: Lightweight (under 5 oz.) is great for summer, while heavyweight (over 6 oz.) feels more substantial and premium.

Step 3: Design with Intention

Whether you're uploading a corporate logo or creating something new in our Design Lab, keep these principles in mind:

  • Keep it Simple: A clean logo or short phrase is often more impactful than a cluttered design.

  • Prioritize Contrast: Ensure your design pops by using light colors on dark shirts and dark colors on light shirts.

  • Think of the Audience: Does your group want an oversized, trendy "streetwear" look or a professional, fitted style?

Step 4: Streamline Your Delivery

Finalizing the order is the last hurdle. Consider which method works best for your group:

  • Single Shipment: Best for handing shirts out in person at an event.

  • Group Orders: We can provide a custom link where each person enters their own size and address, and we ship directly to them.
